Recovery of Salmonella in the Laboratory

The recovery of Samonella begins along with testing for other diseases. The routine at Veterinarian Labs in the State And the County is testing for West Nile Virus, Paramyxovirus, Bird Flu, Chlamydia and Salmonella.
The bird will be cut and parts of it's organs will be plucked, then minced and placed on Selective media (media that select for a particular organism that is being thought). The plates are then watched for the next 24 to 48 hours for green or black colonies (lactose non fermenters).
Those suspicious colonies and then taken and placed on more selective media. If a color pattern of black over red (Acid/Alkaline) appears, then there is a likelihood that the organism is Salmonella. further testing will proceed to confirm

Testing protocol at the State and County Labs A plane plate of H.E. media before inoculating it.
A plate of HE as the plane one above showing a growth of normal gut bacteria (no Salmonella) A plate of HE as the plate above with a growth of possible salmonella. Further testing is now needed.
An un inoculated tube of TSA media A TSA media with a growth of possible Salmonella
